Alister Stuart Bowman was born 22 September 1855 at 'Archerfield', Singleton, NSW, Alister Bowman was a medical doctor (BA, Sydney University 1878) who set up practice at 'Pelham' Singleton, NSW in 1884 and continued to work there for 50 years.
He joined the 4th Infantry Volunteer Regiment in 1884 then from the payroll returns for the Singleton Troop, New South Wales Lancers spanning 1893 to 1903, he joined the Troop as a Trooper on 20 January 1894; was promoted to First Lieutenant on 1 October 1894; Promoted Captain 16 May 1895, a rank and CO of the Troop he still held when the ledger ended.
On the Annual Field Training Return dated 9 March 1895, he was graded "Good" by both his CO and the Inspecting Officer (highest grading was "Excellent").
In civil life Alister Bowman was appointed Government Medical Officer in 1898.
Captain AS Bowman is shown on the illuminated nominal role of the Regiment dated 1903, prepared for Federation and the creation of the 1st Australian Light Horse Brigade, as commanding the Singleton Troop.
In 1900, Captain Bowman was charged as per the letter, left, on the NSW Lancers letterhead and dated 05 Feb 1900 to notify Tom Morris' family and friends of him being nominated for the VC. Alister Bowman retired with the rank of Major in 1905 aged 50; he continued to practice medicine.
